These magical spirits tell the stories of the displaced, the invisible and the return of the wilderness, as they honor the past, present and the future. In this dance for film we see the hidden, and the evident, as we dance towards our insistence on revealing that which is needed. While living in Athens, GA (2000-2009), she co-founded/directed Floorspace Movement Arts Center, where she curated The Handful Series and hosted numerous dance workshops and performances. She also worked as an adjunct professor in the Dance Departments at University of Georgia and Emory University. Julie has been making solo and group work since she was a high school student at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio. Most recently, she directed ANIMAL, which premiered in September 2013 at Skwhirlhaus in Atlanta, Georgia. ANIMAL, chapter 2, had its premiere at Performática in Cholula, Mexico in April 2014. Her latest solo, RUST, premiered at Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA) in March 2015. Since then Zap has traveled often, splitting time between performance, teaching, visual arts and direct environmental activism in: Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru and CA, NYC, ID, NC, VA, CO (USA). Zap has been involved with the Zen Monkey Project (ZMP) since 1995 performing/teaching/stage-managing/producing/directing evening-length pieces. She facilitated: New Dance Space and co-facilitated Studio 11 at the McGuffey Art Center, organized performance festivals and ZMP’s summer dance intensives. She is also a visual artist who prints cartoon books, paints, makes murals, sculpture and builds performance installation sets that also include lights and costumes. Zap has been a main organizer for many large-scale community endeavors. Zap was a full time core teacher at the Living Education Center for Ecology and the Arts, an alternative high school in Charlottesville, VA, for almost a decade. Documentary filmmaker. Her work weaves in different narrative forms that crossover the film essay, found footage, an anthropological perspective and dance for screen; searching for a creative and expanded use of audiovisual language. “The dance of memory” is her first feature documentary as a director, which awarded her with the Fund for Quality Cinematography by the mexican institute of cinematography. The film has been awarded by the most recognized film festivals in Mexico and its been considered by the mexican critics as part of the top ten best documentary films in 2014. She studied a master in Creative documentary in Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, and has been benefitted twice by Fund for Culture fo the Arts in Mexico (FONCA) and the National Council for Culture and Arts (CONACULTA). She also obtained the Fellowship award FICG-Flaherty Seminar in 2014 and the first prize at the International Biennial of Video Art an Animation of Puebla with a short film titled “Hermosa danza de la resistencia”. She grew up in México City where she began her dance and artistic studies at an early age. Graduated with a BFA in 2008 from the Universidad de las Américas Puebla. Her dance background has been defined by improvisation and different somatic practices, primarily Body Mind Centering , the Humphrey-Limón technique and philosophy, Release technique, and ballet (Cuban style). In the past seven years, she has collaborated with the american artist Zap McConnell director @Hand Productions in various multidisciplinary projects in México and the United States, which included community work and social and environmental awareness, being The Unearthing a grand productions and with an important impact in Charlottesville's community. Since 2000, she has also performed with several groups and companies based in México City and Puebla such as CODACO, Cava-Parker Dance, Sunny Savoy Dance Company, Colectivo 2Z, Malva Danza, Dharma Danza, and collaborated with other independent artist such as Ray E. Schwartz, Julie Rothschild, Paola de la Concha, Lourdes Roth, Cinthia Pérez Navarro, Gabriela Carrera, Anibal Castellan, Amira Ramírez, documentalist and videographer Gabriela D. Ruvalcaba, musicians Diego and Arcadio M. Lanz, photographer Ana Paula M. Lanz, among others. Constantly questioning the concept of identity, the boundaries between art and life, the relationship between individuals and their interaction within a specific context, and dance improvisation as a process that constantly redefines itself and the implicated relationships, her main focus in the past years has been deeply influenced by a somatic practice and the principles of Narrative Therapy. He spent most of his childhood in the United States, where he studied singing in the choir of BROOK FOREST, in Chicago Illinois. Then he returns during adolescence, the country of his blood, Mexico. She graduated with a degree in architecture at the UDLAP, where he also earned the Certificate in Contemporary Dance since then has been involved in dance, music and singing. In 2013 he begins to form with private singing lessons in Cholula, Buenos Aires and Mexico DF her stage name, SUCÚLIMA (sacred gourd), the tribe receives Wixarica to be recognized as a singer by his Indian master Tao. Her work has kept in artistic projects dedicated to the values f social and environmental justice, where she has participated in various musical, audiovisual, muralist and theatrical productions starring in singing and contemporary dance in Mexico and the United States in the works: The unearthing (2011 - 2012) led by Zap McConnell, Carnival of Resistance (2013) directed by Tevyn East and Alice in the house Canta (2013) directed by COLLECTIVE TOMATO. She is co –fundadora the COLLECTIVE TOMATO, multidisciplinary group holding CITY WALL (shared mural) project currently active member of the Collective Bank Chicken. She is a student Isolation singing (opera singer of Paris) and Jaranera three years. From her home, Cholula, begins its flowering in the composition and interpretation of songs lined up to defend the land values, social justice and the rights of women and indigenous people. She has been trained in Classical Ballet under the tutelage of Pedro Beiro and Bertha Gómez, in Contemporary Dance and Somatic Practice by Ray Eliot Schwartz, Mayra Morales and Francisco Carrera, in Contact Improvisation with Nancy Stark Smith, Daniel Lepkoff, Martin Keogh, Karl Frost, in Flying Low with David Zambrano and Karen de Luna Fors, and in Theater PlayBack with Carlos Camarillo in collaboration with the Colectivo de Artes de Participacion ProAgrupa. She currently lives in the city of Puebla, and coursing the second year of the Body Mind Movement Formation as a Somatic Educator in Mexico City. Since 2014 she has been a member of the Chicken Bank Collective, with whom she collaborates in the creation, management and production of artistic residences and staging.
